Two important things came out of Saturday’s match between Belmont Shore and OMBAC, neither of which had all that much to do with Belmont Shore.
The first was the fact that OMBAC almost won.
The Atlanta Renegades retained the coveted Atlanta Cup for another season with a 40-12 win over rivals Atlanta Old White on Saturday, led by flyhalf Garry Sullivan, who notched four tries on the day.
The first twenty minutes was almost all Renegades, with Sullivan staking his club to a 21-0 lead with three tries.
Belmont Shore weathered a tough OMBAC team to win a close one Saturday 31-25 and remain undefeated at 4-0 in the SoCal club league.OMBAC dropped to 2-2.
OMBAC gave Belmont Shore quite a scare Saturday in a SoCal DI league match that ended 31-26 for the Long Beach club.
Shore Head Coach Ray Egan wasn’t bothered by the tightness of the game – which ended with OMBAC getting held up in-goal under the posts, a try that, had it been scored, would likely have won the game for the San Diegans.
The Austin Blacks continued their undefeated run in the Texas DI club league with a 37-7 defeat of Fort Worth in very wet, muddy conditions Saturday.Fort Worth scored the opening try on a lineout-and-drive, and that seemed to be the preferred method of scoring throughout the game. The mud was thick and partway through the game it was hard to differentiate the two teams.
The DI club season gets back on the field after most of the leagues took a break during USA 7s weekend.
This past weekend, New Orleans hammered Charlotte 67-0 to move to 5-0 in South.
From the start, New Orleans kept the opponent pinned back behind their 22.
Belmont Shore cemented their place at the top of Southern California’s DI club league with a 35-7 defeat of a very solid Santa Monica team.
While Shore was down 7-5 at halftime, they torched the Dolphins for 31 points in the second half.
