Life University will be part of the CRC in June with a 17-12 defeat of the University of Utah Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.Both teams were intent on playing their game.
The University of Utah made it to the final of the 2012 Las Vegas Invitational CRC Qualifier in dramatic fashion, scoring a last-second try to beat Davenport University 17-12 in the semifinal.
Davenport had beaten Utah in pool play 10-7, a game played at 8am on Friday, when it seemed Utah was not at their best.
The first day of the three-day USA 7s Collegiate Rugby Championship Qualifier at the Las Vegas Invitational ran mostly to form.
Each team played two pool games, and will have one more Friday morning.
After that, there's a long run of playoff matches culminating in the final in Sam Boyd Stadium Saturday afternoon.
In Pool 1A, Life University got a walkover against a late-arriving University of San Francisco, and then eagerly thumped University of Buffalo 33-0.
Life University is looking to make it three major 7s tournaments in a row, as the defending South college 7s and USA Rugby college 7s champions hope to take the USA 7s LLC Collegiate Rugby Championship qualifier at the Las Vegas Invitational February 9-11 .
Thirty-two teams are playing for the one qualifier spot at the CRC in Philadelphia in June.
